IEO Class 9

The SOF International English Olympiad (IEO) for Class 9. The English olympiad tests usage rather than literature. It asks whether a child can handle real text — a notice, an editorial, a conversation — not whether they can recall a chapter.

By this stage the syllabus overlaps heavily with board preparation, so the marginal cost of olympiad practice is low and the marginal benefit — reasoning under time pressure — transfers directly to boards.

The paper

50 questions in one hour, for 60 marks.

The Achievers Section is 5 questions at 3 marks each — 15 of the 60 marks from a tenth of the questions. It is where the paper is actually decided, and it is the part most preparation skips.

Synonyms, Antonyms, Analogies and Spellings, One word, Word order, Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Articles, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Punctuations, Jumbled words, Voices, Concord, Question forms, Tenses, Conditionals, Modals, Reported speech. Collocations, Phrasal verbs, Idioms, Homonyms and homophones, Words related to social cause, Travel, Workplace, etc.

Reading

Search for and retrieve information from various text types like Flyers, Classifieds, Dictionaries, etc., Understand information presented in instruction manual format, Message format and others. Acquire broad understanding of and look for specific information in longer texts like editorials, Essays, etc.

Spoken and Written Expression

Ability to understand situation-based variations in functions like Giving advice, Stating preferences, Discussing probability, Making an offer, etc.

The Achievers Section draws on all three sections above, at higher order.

How Sophoz prepares for it

Practice is weighted towards problems whose shape is unfamiliar, because that is the skill the paper tests. Hints open up an approach rather than giving away the step, so the child still does the noticing.

Sessions are paced backwards from the exam date, with earlier topics revisited at widening intervals. Spacing beats massing by a wide margin — it is the best-evidenced result in learning science.

Mastery is tracked per skill rather than per subject, so a weak area is visible instead of being averaged away inside a percentage.

Before you register

Registration is through the school; SOF does not generally accept individual entries. Classes 3 and above have a second level for top performers, so a strong first paper is not the end of the preparation.
