Vedic maths

Vedic maths is a set of techniques for doing arithmetic in your head quickly. Multiplying two-digit numbers, squaring anything ending in five, checking a result without redoing it. Practised properly, a child becomes noticeably fast.

What it is good for, honestly

Two things, and it is worth being precise because this subject attracts more claims than it can support.

It makes arithmetic fast, which frees attention. A child who is not spending working memory on 47 × 43 has more of it available for the actual problem, and that shows up in ordinary school mathematics.

It builds confidence quickly. The techniques produce a visible, impressive result within a few weeks, which for a child who has decided they are "bad at maths" is often the thing that shifts.

What it does not do is replace conceptual understanding, and Sophoz will not present it as though it does. A child who can square numbers quickly but cannot say why the method works has learned a trick. Both matter; only one is sufficient.

How it is practised

Short, frequent, timed retrieval — the format the technique actually demands. Each session mixes methods rather than drilling one, because varied practice produces slower apparent progress and substantially better retention. The weekly report shows speed and accuracy over time, which is the only honest way to see improvement in a skill nobody examines.
