ISO Class 12
The ISO for Class 12 — the 50-question paper, its sections, the Class 12 syllabus, and how to prepare for the reasoning that carries the marks.
Covers
- Class 12
The SOF International Science Olympiad (ISO) for Class 12. The science olympiad rewards understanding over recall. A child who has memorised a definition and one who can predict what happens when a variable changes look identical in a school test and very different here.
At this level the paper runs alongside board and entrance preparation. It is worth sitting for the diagnostic value: it shows where understanding is thin before an entrance exam does.
The paper
50 questions in one hour, for 60 marks.
| Section | Questions | Marks each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics & Chemistry | 25 | 1 | 25 |
| Mathematics or Biology | 20 | 1 | 20 |
| Achievers Section | 5 | 3 | 15 |
| Total | 50 | 60 |
The Achievers Section is 5 questions at 3 marks each — 15 of the 60 marks from a tenth of the questions. It is where the paper is actually decided, and it is the part most preparation skips.
What is on the syllabus
Section 3 is a choice: a candidate sits either the mathematics paper or the biology paper, not both. Both are listed here.
Physics and Chemistry
Physics : Electricity and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction, Alternating current, Electromagnetic waves, Optics, Modern Physics, Semiconductor Electronics. Chemistry : Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, The d -and f -Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers, Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, Amines, Biomolecules.
The Mathematics option
Relations and Functions, Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Matrices, Determinants, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Integrals, Application of Integrals, Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Three Dimensional Geometry, Linear Programming, Probability.
The Biology option
Reproduction, Genetics and Evolution, Biology in Human Welfare, Biotechnology, Ecology.
The Achievers Section draws on the same syllabus, at higher order.
How Sophoz prepares for it
Practice is weighted towards problems whose shape is unfamiliar, because that is the skill the paper tests. Hints open up an approach rather than giving away the step, so the child still does the noticing.
Sessions are paced backwards from the exam date, with earlier topics revisited at widening intervals. Spacing beats massing by a wide margin — it is the best-evidenced result in learning science.
Mastery is tracked per skill rather than per subject, so a weak area is visible instead of being averaged away inside a percentage.
Before you register
Registration is through the school; SOF does not generally accept individual entries. Classes 3 and above have a second level for top performers, so a strong first paper is not the end of the preparation.

Sophoz builds each session around what your child has not yet mastered, and reports what they actually understood rather than what they scored.
